Walsall vs Barnsley Predictions

Barnsley missed out on the chance to reduce the gap between themselves and league leaders Luton Town last weekend when they could only manage a 0-0 draw with Doncaster Rovers, meaning the gap between the top two clubs remains at five points. Struggling Walsall play host to Barnsley on Saturday, where as little as a draw could be enough to lift the home side out of the relegation zone and a victory could see them move into mid table. Both teams have plenty to play for this weekend, but it’s the visitors Barnsley that head into the match as the bookmakers favourites to collect all three points.

Walsall took the lead at the Stadium of Light in the fourth minute through Gordon, but it proved to be a false dawn for the visitors as Sunderland stalwart Cattermole equalised for the hosts before the break and former Walsall striker Grigg scored the Black Cats’ winner with nineteen minutes left on the clock. Barnsley made it six games without conceding a goal last weekend, but a fourth 0-0 draw in their last six matches suggest the Tykes are having some difficulties finding the back of the net. The visitors had 54% of the possession at The Keepmoat Stadium, but it was Doncaster Rovers who looked the more likely to score after seeing seven of their eleven shots saved by Barnsley goalkeeper Davies.

The recent head to head record between these two clubs, their overall performance in League One this season, and Barnsley’s excellent defensive record over the last month point towards a win and another clean sheet for the visitors on Saturday. These two sides are battling at opposite ends of the table in League One, and thirty-three points separate the clubs heading into Saturday’s match. Three of the last six meetings between these two clubs have ended in a win to nil, and Barnsley have won four of the last six encounters. Walsall have lost three of their last six matches, while Barnsley are unbeaten in their last thirteen matches. The visitors have been in fine defensive form over the last month or so, keeping clean sheets in each of their last six matches, while Walsall have only managed to keep two clean sheets in their last six attempts. Barnsley haven’t scored many goals of late, but the games they have won have seen at least two goals scored, which is why a final scoreline of 2-0 to the visitors is well worth a bet.

Cook top scores in his debut season for Walsall with eleven league goals, and the striker has also chipped in with two assists. Barnsley’s top scorer Moore has scored sixteen times in League One this season, and they have certainly missed the forward’s goals in recent weeks. Former Fulham striker Woodrow is likely to lead the line for the visitors, due to Moore’s injury, and with eleven league goals so far this season, the forward will certainly cause the Walsall defence a few headaches this weekend. We’re confident that Barnsley will win to nil on Saturday, and have backed a final score of 2-0. The visitor’s defence has been impenetrable over the last month, keeping six clean sheets in their last six attempts, while Walsall have shipped ten goals during that same six game period.
