Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne City Predictions

      • Wellington Phoenix have won three of their last five and are unbeaten in six at home.
      • Melbourne City have been in patchy form, winning two of their last five games.
      • Wellington have scored 1.5 goals per game on average, conceding 1.37 goals per game.
      • Melbourne City have scored 1.88 goals per game on average, conceding 1.52 goals per game.

Can Wellington Phoenix keep their excellent home form going?

Wellington Phoenix have been the surprise package of the A-League season so far, winning seven of their 16 games and sitting in fourth in the table. Recently they’ve picked up win against Newcastle, Western Sydney and Central Coast but two losses in their last five have stopped them from pushing the top three any further.

Wellington have scored 24 times this season, an average of 1.5 goals per game but this has risen slightly over their last five games with that average moving to 1.6 goals per game. In defence the side have conceded an average of 1.37 goals per game but this too has risen recently, sitting at 1.4 goals per game over the past five games.

Melbourne City need a win to keep in touch with Sydney at the top.

Melbourne City have enjoyed a good season but in recent weeks have lost a little form, seeing their deficit to Sydney FC rise to 10 points, with the current leaders having two games in hand. They beat Melbourne Victory last weekend but previous poor results against Perth and Adelaide have left Melbourne City with it all to do in their pursuit of the A-League title.

Melbourne City have certainly been involved in plenty of goals this season, with their games seeing an average of 3.4 goals per game. They’ve averaged 1.88 goals per game this season but this has fallen to 1.4 goals per game in recent weeks but their defensive record has also improved in recent weeks with the side only conceding 1.2 goals per game on average over the past five weeks.

Who comes out on top and collects the three points?

These two sides will both be keen to pick up the win this weekend in order to consolidate their places in the top six and try and close the gap on those above them. There should be plenty of goals in what looks to be an open game and we’re predicting that both teams will score and the 2.5 goal line will be beaten.

The score is a little harder to predict with both sides possessing the goal threat to win the game. We think the two sides are too close to be separating though and we’re predicting that this match will finish 2-2 with both sides getting the chance to showcase their attacking talents but unable to land the winning goal.
