Western Sydney Wanderers vs Melbourne City Predictions

Western Sydney Wanderers come into this weekend’s match well rested after Markus Babbel’s side had a bye round last week. This should be a benefit to them, with their opponents facing a tough Brisbane Roar side last time out and having a week’s less rest. The season has started well for Wanderers, as they have conceded the least amount of goals in the A-League this season and lost just once. This represents a tough test for them, though, and they enter the game as slight outsiders despite the home advantage.

They tasted defeat in their last game, with Western United claiming a 2-1 win and they’ll be hoping to bounce back here. No new injury worries will be a boost to the side and the goalscoring exploits of Mitch Duke will buoy them further, with the Socceroo scoring four so far this season. The defence has been the biggest bonus for the side, however, with just four goals conceded, averaging less than a goal a game. But that record will be under threat this weekend as they come up against the league’s top marksman, Jamie Maclaren.

Maclaren has seven goals so far this term but has only played three games due to injury, scoring two goals twice and netting a hat-trick against Brisbane Roar last weekend. Despite his three goals, City still ended up on the losing end, with Brisbane’s four goals giving them the win; Melbourne City will be looking to come back themselves after that loss. Florin Berenguer remaining on the sidelines will weaken them but there is plenty of talent in the Melbourne City squad and they will be hopeful of having enough to leave Sydney with all three points.

The two sides have been among the most impressive so far this term and we’re predicting that will continue with the goal threat at either end leading to plenty of chances. The firepower of Maclaren should give the visitors the edge and despite thinking both teams will score, we’re also backing Melbourne City to come out victorious. This is an indication Western Sydney Wanderers are by no means much weaker than their opponents but just lack the quality in the final third to match their opponents.

Both sides have competed well this season, as demonstrated by amassing 62 shots on target between them since the opening day of the season. There are also goals from other sources too, with Melbourne City having seven different scorers of their 13 goals and Western Sydney having 3 players finding the net a combined six times. With such a goal threat between the sides, goals are anticipated but the defensive capabilities of the teams could limit the amount of goals given away and we’re backing a 2-1 win for Melbourne City because of this.
