Whitecaps vs Toronto FC Predictions

Whitecaps haven’t enjoyed the best of starts to the season just yet. They lost at Tigres in the CONCACAF Champions League in midweek to follow on from a weekend loss at San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS. Prior to that they had opened the MLS season with a drab goalless draw at home to Philadelphia Union, so they are still on the hunt for their first win of the season.

Last weekend will have been a particular disappointment for the travelling Whitecaps fans. They saw their team take a two goal lead within 20 minutes and were set for a cruise to victory, but Chris Wondolowski pulled one back before the break and the hosts had a much better second half, eventually scoring the winner with 11 minutes left on the clock.

It certainly didn’t help that goalkeeper David Ousted was sent off after just 23 minutes of play, and they will now be without their number one keeper for this match. They also refused to start their exciting new signing Fredy Montero for the second week in a row, only bringing him on with half an hour left to play. The Colombian attacker will be hoping he gets a chance to play the full 90 minutes on Saturday.

Toronto FC also had a disappointing weekend last time out. They followed their goalless opener with a 2-2 draw at Philadelphia Union, but the far bigger concern will be the injury sustained by star player Sebastian Giovinco at the end of the first half. He has been ruled out of this clash, but they are hopeful that the injury isn’t too serious.

Away from home Toronto FC are generally a good side, and they’re facing a Whitecaps side who have only won two of their last 11 home games in the MLS. They have lost four of these games, whilst Toronto FC have won four, drawn four, and lost just one of their last nine away days in the league.

Without Giovinco Toronto are a dramatically different team though. He’s the best player in the MLS and has the entire Toronto FC side based around his threat in front of goal. They are still a well drilled side though, and with Whitecaps struggling so much at the start of this season and having an overall poor home record I don’t fancy their chances of getting the win either.

Five of Whitecaps’ last 11 home games have ended all square, and Toronto FC have seen a draw in four of their last nine on the road. This makes odds of 23/10 for a Draw look a good value backing, so I’m going for that alongside a 1-1 correct score predictions at 11/2.
