      Wigan vs Aston Villa Predictions

Will Aston Villa continue their push for the play-offs in this trip to Wigan? They head to the DW Stadium five points shy of a top-six finish, following a few setbacks of late. Despite that, they received a boost this week, as Tammy Abraham decided to reject a move to Wolves in order to finish the season with Aston Villa. He’s spearheading their promotion bid, as the forward is the current top scorer in the division. Can he continue that high scoring form when they visit a struggling Wigan side?

The hosts have lost six of their last seven, a run which has seen them dumped out of the FA Cup. They’ve picked up no Championship wins since the start of December, while they’ve scored just twice in that seven-game run. The hosts have fallen into danger, sitting 20th in the table – four points clear of the drop zone. They had started with form that put them in and around the top six, but a dramatic slide has left the Latics in trouble. Their hopes of turning things around and keeping a place in the second tier aren’t likely to grow here, as they face a strong Villa side.

The visitors were thumped in the FA Cup last weekend, losing 3-0 at home to fellow Championship side Swansea. However, they don’t seem too bothered about cup ambitions this term, with a push for the Premier League their key priority. Dean Smith has turned things around, taking them from around where Wigan are to the top half in a matter of months, and now the Villains are out to build on that form and make a charge for a play-off place.

The visitors should move in on the top six this weekend, as they are visiting a side who look dire at the minute. Make no mistake, this is relegation form from the Latics. The hosts have lost to nil in their last three games here, failing to score in four of their last five at this ground. Since losing at home for the first time in the Championship this term, they’ve won once. Their momentum was wiped away, and they’ve struggled to get it back.

In the last six games at this ground, Leeds, Sheffield United, Birmingham and Derby have claimed victories. Those are all sides in the top 10 alongside Villa, and we see the visitors following their lead. Villa have had issues in recent games, but their away record has been great. They’ve gone five games unbeaten, winning at Swansea, Middlesbrough and Derby. They should add to that against a poor Wigan side, so we’re backing an away win here.
