Reason for tip

Bristol City have begun the new season with back-to-back losses, and they averaged two goals conceded per away game last campaign. Wigan, on the other hand, have made a solid start after drawing with Preston North End and Norwich City.

Wigan vs Bristol City Predictions

  • Five of Bristol City’s last six competitive matches have contained over 2.5 goals.
  • The Robins’ three outings of 2022-23 (league and cup) have contained a total of 13 goals.
  • Wigan Athletic plundered a division-high 82 goals as they won League One last season.

Goals expected when Robins visit

Wigan Athletic have made a solid start to life back in the Championship, claiming creditable 0-0 and 1-1 draws against Preston North End and Norwich City respectively, but the visit of a Bristol City team which conceded 77 league goals last term offers them an opportunity for a first win, and perhaps, for the DW Stadium to be treated to some more goals.

Indeed, goals were not in short supply at Wigan last term, with Leam Richardson’s team leading the third tier with 82 strikes en route to the title. But before their solid start to the new season, the Latics ended last campaign with a run of both teams scoring in seven of their last 10 matches, netting 19 goals of their own during that run; a porous visiting defence should make entertainment likely.

Only Reading and Peterborough United shipped more Championship goals than Nigel Peason’s Bristol City last season, and their familiar problems have surfaced during back-to-back losses to Hull City and Sunderland, both of which contained over 2.5 goals and saw goals at both ends, at the outset of the new term. Five of their last six competitive matches have now contained over 2.5 goals, though their 4-1 EFL Cup win at Coventry, in which Andi Wiemann scored, offered promise.

Porous visitors make goalfest likely

Given Bristol City’s dire defensive record, particularly on the road where they averaged over two goals against per game last season, backing over 2.5 goals to be scored looks prudent.

Meanwhile, Pearson’s side showed renewed attacking verve in midweek, but slumped to 14 away losses last season, and Wigan could come away with a 2-1 victory.
