Reason For Wigan vs Stoke City Betting Tips

After a pleasing opening-day effort, Wigan came unstuck just a few days ago, as they were beaten soundly by Preston. The Latics will be happy to return home for this EFL Cup match. Stoke are also looking to bounce back after they tasted their second defeat in as many matches at the weekend.

Wigan endured a rough afternoon on Saturday, as they lost by three goals to nil away against Preston. Such a result was undoubtedly disappointing, though now back on their own patch, Paul Cook’s men will fancy themselves to do better.

First time out, Wigan secured themselves a pleasing 3-2 win over Cardiff, who most people have touted for automatic promotion. On that occasion, Wigan offered plenty going forward, as they scored three goals and created a pleasing 1.83 expected goals for. Summer signing Josh Windass, who joined from Rangers, looked particularly useful. However, while they looked good going forward, the Latics displayed clear defensive frailties, as they conceded twice and surrendered a rather displeasing 1.94 expected goals. Defensive weakness was once again at the forefront of their game at Deepdale just a few days ago, so stopping teams from both creating and scoring is likely to be high on the agenda for Paul Cook in the coming weeks.

Stoke have lost both of their first two Championship matches, though their performances haven’t been without promise. Much like Wigan, they’ve looked a tad frail at the back. Despite not giving away an abundance of chances against QPR on match-day one, when push came to shove, the Potters looked easy to breach, while much of the same can be said for their efforts at The Valley just a few days ago.

Against Charlton, Stoke once again offered a decent amount going forward; they bettered their opponents in terms of shots, but they once again looked far too easy to score against, while they were especially susceptible to the break. Nathan Jones task is similar to Paul Cook’s, in the sense that he must get his side to offer more resistance if they’re to make any headway this term.

Ahead of this match, goals are easy to fancy. More importantly, given the early-season performances of both, ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ looks overpriced. Wigan looked very effective going forward when playing at home on match-day one, but they also gave a lot away. Stoke offered an attacking threat when scoring in their first away match of the season, but they were not at all hard to break down defensively. Add in that Wigan’s only competitive home game this season produced five goals and 3.77 expected goals, and we can conclude that a goal-filled game is slightly more likely than the early prices suggest. Therefore, supporting the goals to arrive at DW Stadium on Tuesday night is a solid option.
