Young Boys vs Servette Predictions

Young Boys finished twenty points clear of their nearest rivals Basel last season and will be hoping to dominate the field once again as we prepare for the start of the 2019/20 campaign. Visiting Servette couldn’t have picked a trickier opening game to life back in the top flight of Swiss football, but after winning the Challenge League with relative ease they will be confident about their chances of staying up this season.

Young Boys played seven pre-season games and picked up wins against Crystal Palace, Eintracht Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Rapperswil-Jona, drew with Levski Sofia, and lost to Vaduz and Kriens. Overall it was a successful pre-season for the Super League winners who also managed to keep hold of the majority of their squad and made profits on a couple of players. Servette only played four friendlies over the summer but did manage to beat Lyon and Grasshopper, whilst losing against Lausanne Sport and Stade Lausanne Ouchy. The visitors haven’t been able to spend much money but they haven’t lost any key players either which should keep them fairly competitive this season, though they are unlikely to finish any higher than eight.

The form and performances of both clubs heading into the opening game of the season, where the pair were playing last season, and their recent head to head record, all point towards a win for Young Boys and over 3.5 goals being scored. Young Boys won the Super League title at a canter last season, while Servette were playing in the second tier of Swiss football. Young Boys have won two of their last three meetings with Servette. Over 3.5 goals have been scored in two of Young Boys last five and three of Servette’s last six matches, which is why we’re backing a 4-1 win for the hosts this weekend.

Guillaume Hoarau scored 24 goals in 28 league appearances last season for Young Boys and finished as the top scorer in the Super League, while teammate Jean-Pierre Nsame scored 15 goals in 29 matches and the pair formed a formidable partnership up-front. Dutch striker Alex Schalk scored 9 times in the league for Servette on their way to the Challenge League title and it will be interesting to see if the former Ross County striker can make the step up for the 2019/20 campaign.

We’re confident that Young Boys will win and over 3.5 goals will be scored on Sunday, and have predicted a final scoreline of 4-1. The gap in quality between these two teams means anything but a convincing win for the hosts seems highly unlikely this weekend. Young Boys won the title with ease and scored goals for fun, and while their guests do carry an unknown quality about them, it shouldn’t take too long for Young Boys to exploit their weaknesses and stroll to victory.
