German Darts Masters – Friday Accumulator
Gary Anderson takes on Nico Kurz in the first round of the German Darts Masters on Friday night. Anderson lost out to Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals of the US Darts Masters, and although he’ll be disappointed not to have gone further in trying to defend that title, there were positive signs for the ‘The Flying Scotsman’. His maximum hitting was particularly strong, firing in nine 180s in 24 legs of darts – a repeat of that should be more enough to beat Kurz in the 180 department.
Peter Wright is expected to have a good week in Cologne, and he starts his tournament with a very winnable match against Robert Marijanovic. The German is a PDC ProTour card holder, but he’s failed to qualify for any of the European Tour events so far this year, and sits in a lowly 99th on the Players Championship Order of Merit this year. Wright played well in Las Vegas last week, and a similar showing here should sweep the out-of-form German player aside.
In what the bookies see as the closest first-round clash, Raymond van Barneveld takes on Gabriel Clemens. ‘Barney’ hasn’t been seen on stage since the end of May at the Dutch Darts Masters, and although he struggled in the Premier League this year, he did reach a Player Championship qualifier final in March, so the ability remains. Clemens has played some good darts recently, and may not reaped the rewards his darts have deserved. This is expected to be a close encounter, so over 9.5 legs looks the preferred option.
This is one of the ties of the first-round as Michael van Gerwen takes on Martin Schindler. Van Gerwen was extremely disappointing last weekend, he averaged just 89 in his loss to Michael Smith, and looked well below his usual standards. He’s been handed one of the toughest first-round matches in Cologne, as Schindler is a tough opponent, especially when playing in his home nation. ‘The Wall’ doesn’t have a great record against the World Number One, but he did win their most recent encounter. With ‘MvG’ looking below par recently, this is a good opportunity for Schindler, and he should be looking to take at least three legs off van Gerwen here.
