Athletic Bilbao to Win

Reason for tip

Athletic Club not only head into this game unbeaten in ten outings, but they have won the last four, including a recent success over Real Madrid. Villarreal, on the other hand, are winless in three and have lost two of their last five on the road.

Athletic Bilbao 2-1

Reason for tip

Athletic Bilbao have conceded exactly once in five of their last seven, including a trio of 2-1 wins, whereas Villarreal have conceded exactly twice in back-to-back league matches.

Athletic Bilbao vs Villarreal Predictions

  • Athletic Bilbao are on a run of four wins in a row
  • Villarreal have managed only one victory in the last 11 head-to-heads
  • The hosts have gone ten games without defeat in all competitions.

Athletic Club enjoying themselves

A famous win over Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao’s first against Los Blancos in the league for almost a decade, means the Basque club come into this fixture on a high.

They have now won four games in a row across all competitions, and as such are in a strong position to grab a UEFA Champions League qualification place.

Ernesto Valverde’s side have been in particularly brutal form at San Mames, where they have won six out of their last seven encounters, with the only exception being a 1-1 stalemate with Real Betis.

A bad match-up for Villarreal

As such, Villarreal look up against it as they make the long trip to Bilbao, even more so when factoring in their surprise 1-0 Copa del Rey defeat to Pontevedra in midweek.

That was a third game without a win in all competitions for the Yellow Submarines, following 2-2 draws with Osasuna and Girona.

They have also only won two of their last five on the road, while Marcelino García Toral’s side have a shocking record in head-to-heads, winning merely one of the last 11.

I predict that Athletic Bilbao will win this game, with 2-1 victory my correct score prediction.
