Five Stripes can capitalise on DC downturn

Atlanta United have been on a tear up the Eastern Conference standings since appointing Gonzalo Pineda as their coach in August, winning five of six matches.

They seem to be a very different team to the one that struggled for the first few months of the season under Gabriel Heinze and now have a legitimate shot at finishing comfortably inside the playoff positions.

Pineda’s accession has coincided – or possibly caused – Atlanta’s former MLS MVP Josef Martinez to find his scoring boots and the Venezuelan comes into this fixture with six goals in his last seven games.

DC United’s defence know they will be in for a tough time from the Caracas crack-shot and the visitors record away from home of late suggests they will concede.

Hernan Losada’s side haven’t kept an away clean sheet since August 1 with eleven goals hitting the back of their net during their last four road trips.

Losada beat Pineda to the DC United job earlier this year, so it must have been sweet for the Mexican to oversee Atlanta’s 2-1 win at Audi Field less than a month ago.

With that in mind, and the general home and away form of the two sides, we are fully behind the Five Stripes to get the win that would take them above their opponents in the east.

DC United have scored nine in their last four away though, so we believe they can register in a 3-1 defeat on Saturday.
