Cameroon vs Burkina Faso Predictions

  • Cameroon have won each of their last three games without reply.
  • Cameroon haven’t lost a competitive game on home soil since January 2018.
  • Stadium capacity is allowed up to 80% in Cameroon games, 60% for all other nations.
  • Burkina Faso failed to score in five of their last nine away games.

Indomitable Lions to roar into life to kick off AFCON 2022

Host nation Cameroon will open proceedings at this AFCON here in the capital city of Youande and the five-time AFCON champions will be looking to go one better than their third-placed finish in their only prior tournament as hosts back in 1972.

None of the 13 host nations across the last 11 AFCON’s have lost their opening game of a tournament, that is since Burkina Faso hosted the competition in 1998 and lost to Cameroon on the opening day! While that is surely a coincidence, it would be poignant for Cameroon to repeat that opening day success on their own patch.

Vincent Aboubakar and Erick Choupo-Moting have bagged 42 international strikes combined, though we think that the former carries the hopes of his nation on his shoulders at this tournament. However, Aboubakar scored a crucial goal in the 2017 AFCON final, and will be raring to go again.

Burkina Faso won’t go down easily

The visitors have kept an impressive three clean sheets across their last four away games (W2, D2) with the only one in which they conceded a goal in being a 2-2 draw against current AFCON holders Algeria, suggesting they are more than worthy opponents for the hosts.

Currently on their longest unbeaten run in all games (W4, D4), since an 11 game streak ending in 2013, Burkina Faso may find this tougher than any of their solid games that have passed, as they recently lost an eight-game unbeaten run in 2020 with a 1-0 defeat.

All in all, I predict a strong start for the host nation in what promises to be a hard-fought clash between two respected African nations. I am going for a workmanlike 2-0 victory in the correct score market with Aboubakar netting just his second goal in the tournament’s finals.
