Reason For Charlton vs Hull City Predictions

  • Charlton haven’t won a game in any competition since the middle of October.
  • Hull are without a win in three on their travels, two of which they’ve lost.
  • Neither side has won away from home in this fixture since 2007.
  • Hull have conceded one goal more than they’ve scored away from home in the Championship this season.

Hosts hoping to end winless run

Winning four of their first six, Charlton made a pleasing start to life at this level, though things have since gone hugely awry for Lee Bowyer’s men, who come into this match without a win in nine league games, seven of which they’ve lost.

It’s not easy to pinpoint where Charlton are going wrong. They’re not the best defensively, but it’s not as if they’re visibly too weak to compete at this level, while despite failing to win since October, they never receive a battering. Interestingly, only two of their 10 defeats this term have been by more than a single goal.

However, even if they’re not regularly getting hammered, defending is certainly an issue for The Addicks, who’re without a clean sheet in nine. They’ve conceded two or more in six of those nine. Bowyer’s men have scored in six of their last nine, but they’ve only scored more than once twice. Therein lies the problem. They may not be a side that gets rolled over, but based on their defensive numbers, they’re simply not doing enough going forward. And it’s not just goals: Charlton are the worst team in the Championship when it comes to shots for.

Tigers blighted by inconsistency

Hull have done a slightly better job of getting their offensive exploits to outweigh their defensive deficiencies this season; but they’ve not been great, nor have they been consistent of late, failing to win back-to-back since the first week of November.

Thanks to just two wins in six, the Tigers have dropped down to an unappealing 13th position. They’re now five points off the coveted top six, which is without a doubt where they want to be.

Playing on the road is also starting to blight Friday’s visitors. They can be forgiven for losing against a Leeds side that along with West Brom is proving to be too good for this league, but prior to that they lost away to Barnsley, who’re in the relegation zone. Moreover, Hull have won none of their last three travelling matches, while they’ve only won three out of 10 on the road overall this term.

Lack of goals forecast

The early market seems to have this as a game where goals are likely, though if we scratch beneath the surface, it’s easy to feel it could pay to take the opposite view. Charlton have generally scored at home, but they’ve only scored more than once in three out of 10, failing to score in another three.

Moreover, the Addicks rank as the second-worst team in the division when it comes to shots on target at home. They average just 3.00 per game. At the same time, they’ve not made a habit of conceding lots at home, shipping more than once in three out of 10.

Hull are thought of as a goalscoring team, but they’ve not exactly looked menacing in recent away games, posting just seven shots on target in their last 270 minutes of travelling football. Add in that less than three goals have been scored in 55% of Charlton’s games at The Valley and a small play on ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ starts to appeal.
