Tip Reasoning

  • Chelsea have seven points from three Premier League games and have conceded just one goal.
  • The Blues have five clean sheets in their last seven at Stamford Bridge.
  • Villa lost at promoted Watford in the opening round of fixture.

Chelsea can get back to winning ways

Chelsea and Aston Villa meet in the late Premier League kick off on Saturday and anything other than a comfortable win for the hosts would register as a shock.

The Blues’ winning start to the season was brought to an end by Liverpool prior to the international break but they still managed a 1-1 draw at Anfield despite playing the entire second half with 10 men.

Villa lost their season opener at promoted Watford but have since managed four points from two games at Villa Park.  The Villans did manage a win over Chelsea at home in the final round of Premier League fixtures last season, but the Londoners had one eye on the Champions League final then and a repeat result looks unlikely on Saturday.

A Chelsea win to nil stands out

Chelsea have conceded just once this season and that goal came from the penalty spot at Anfield.  Prior to that, Thomas Tuchel’s men overcame Crystal Palace 3-0 and Arsenal 2-0 and I’m backing them to record another victory and a clean sheet against Villa.

The visitors have scored in all of their games this season and have only failed to score in one of their last 14 games in all competitions but this Chelsea defence looks incredibly tough to break down and they should be able to hold out against Villa.

Thomas Tuchel will have to reshuffle his backline as Reece James is suspended after his red card against Liverpool and defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante could also miss out with an ankle injury, but they still have enough quality within the squad to keep Villa at bay regardless.

Havertz can terrorise Villa defence

Chelsea’s marquee summer signing Romelu Lukaku is rated as an injury doubt after aggravating a thigh injury while on international duty with Belgium.  He may well be able to line-up against Villa this weekend regardless, with the issue described as “minor”, but even if he does miss this game the hosts have enough attacking talent to claim a win.

Kai Havertz was sacrificed at half-time after scoring his first goal of the season against Liverpool as Tuchel adopted a defensive approach when Chelsea had been reduced to 10 men.  The former Bayer Leverkusen man did enjoy a productive international break with Germany though as he registered an assist against Iceland, and he could be Chelsea’s danger man this weekend.

Villa have conceded three goals in their three most recent Premier League defeats and correct score bettors may fancy a 3-0 win for the home side in this match-up, with Havertz a contender for an anytime goal.

Chelsea predicted lineup: Mendy, Christensen, Chalobah, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Kovacic, Jorginho, Alonso, Mouint, Havertz, Lukaku (3-4-2-1)

Aston Villa predicted lineup: Steer, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, El Ghazi, Luiz, McGinn, Young, Ings, Watkins (4-1-4-1)
