It was a tale of three penalties as Chelsea fell to a shock 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Liverpool in the first match of the new Women’s Super League season.

Fran Kirby had put the Londoners ahead after three minutes from the spot but two penalties from Liverpool, both scored by Katie Stengel, gave them maximum points.

It was a result very few would have envisaged given Chelsea lost only two league matches on their way to the title last season and it should have acted as a wake-up call.

In their first match of the season at Kingsmeadow, they can get back to winning ways against a Manchester City team who they beat 3-2 in the final of the FA Women’s Cup and home and away in the league last season.

But while City may have lost to Aston Villa in their opener, they still scored three goals and can get on the scoresheet against Chelsea. We predict a 2-1 win for the hosts.
