Draw

Reason for tip

Crewe need one point to secure a play-off spot while Colchester require one point to be certain of avoiding relegation. A draw would suit both parties and make for a terrible watch if contrived, but Crewe have drawn two of their last three away League Two matches anyway and that seems like the most likely outcome.

Draw 0-0

Reason for tip

Crewe have kept three consecutive away clean sheets and scored only one goal away from home during that span – failing to score in five of their last six games. Colchester kept a rare clean sheet against Grimsby a fortnight ago and may settle for a 0-0 here as it would assure them of survival in the Football League.

League Two clash may be no cliffhanger

Colchester and Crewe could play out a fairly uneventful draw on Saturday if the mood takes them as that would ensure both clubs get what they need on the final day of the regular season.

The Railwaymen are bidding to make the play-offs and require one point to be certain of a top-seven finish while Colchester are three points clear of the drop zone going into Saturday’s clash at JobServe Community Stadium.

It would take a defeat coupled with a Sutton United win at fourth-placed MK Dons and a five-goal swing in goal difference to take them into non-league, which is an unlikely but not impossible scenario.

Railwaymen’s record suggest goals could be scarce

Both sides could be of a mind to shut up shop in a bid to get a point as bettors of a certain vintage hark back to the infamous battle of Gijon between Austria and Germany at the 1982 World Cup.

The unedifying sight of neither team showing any desire to attack is unlikely to materialise until late on and there is always the prospect that word reaches the ground that Sutton are sunk or the likes of Crawley cannot catch Crewe.

But the Cheshire club have had two 0-0 draws in their last three away games and were not far off a third when beating Morecambe 1-0 earlier this month, so there is a decent case for this finishing goalless anyway.
