Cologne vs Mainz Predictions

  • Mainz’s 12 Bundesliga away games have averaged 4.25 goals per game, with all but one seeing over 2.5 goals land.
  • Over 2.5 goals has landed in each of Cologne’s last eight Bundesliga games.
  • Mainz have scored in five of their last six league away games but have conceded 11 in this period.
  • Cologne have won five of their last six Bundesliga home matches.

Season of two halves for Cologne

Cologne fell to a rare defeat prior to the enforced break in Bundesliga action, narrowly losing 2-1 in their Rhine Derby clash at Borussia Monchengladbach. As disappointing as it is to lose to a rival, Cologne fans can be very happy with how their team have progressed this season.

Promoted back to the top flight this season, Cologne endured a torrid start to the campaign as they lost 10 of their opening 14 matches. They looked destined for a swift return to the second tier, but the second half of the season has seen a turnaround of epic proportions.

Cologne have now won eight of their last 11 league games, sitting on a 14 point cushion over the relegation spots and now in serious contention for Europa League qualification. They have scored a massive 27 goals in these 11 games and have only failed to beat Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach – all teams residing in the Bundesliga top four.

Mainz not out of danger yet

Meanwhile, Mainz find themselves just four points clear of the relegation playoff position and were denied the three points by a late Fortuna Dusseldorf equaliser last time out. They have won just two of their last nine Bundesliga outings and find themselves in this precarious position largely due to their ineptitude at the back.

The visitors have shipped 53 goals in their 25 league matches this term, including an 8-0 drubbing away to RB Leipzig earlier in the season. They do find the net with regularity though and this trend continues away from home.

In fact, their 12 trips away have averaged a massive 4.25 goals per game, with all but one of them seeing at least three goals scored in total.

Goals galore at RheinEnergieStadion

Cologne are no strangers to a goal fest either. Over 2.5 goals has landed in each of their last eight league games and eight of their 12 home games this term. Given both teams’ propensity for high scoring matches backing another over 2.5 goals outcome seems sensible, even more so with Mainz’s first choice goalkeeper ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Cologne have won five of their last six at home too, only failing to take points from their hosting of Bayern Munich. They have netted exactly three goals in two of their last four on home soil but, with Mainz scoring in five of their last six on the road and Cologne without the absent Rafael Czichos at centre back, we can’t see them keeping a clean sheet. A 3-1 win for the in form hosts looks ideal for our correct score prediction.
