Reason For Derby vs Brentford Predictions

  • Derby have conceded the second-fewest home goals in the Championship
  • 14 of Derby’s 21 home games have seen under 2.5 goals scored
  • Brentford have the second-best away defence in the division
  • Derby’s four meetings with the top six here have finished 1-1

Derby wobble

Having been the form side in the Championship, Derby have hit a tough period in the campaign. They’ve had two big tests in the last week and failed both, as they struggled in a 1-1 draw with Forest before losing at West Brom. Having been seconds away from defeat to their midlands rivals, The Rams are lucky to still be in the playoff fight as it stands.

There’s another test for Derby this weekend, as they host third-placed Brentford. This is likely the semi-final that awaits the Rams if they can make it into sixth, so this is a major test of their promotion credentials. Meanwhile, it’s also a tricky trip for a Brentford side who haven’t yet given up hope of automatic promotion.

Home Pride for Rams

Derby may have had a tough week, but they can look back on an incredible season at Pride Park this term. The hosts have the league’s second-best home record, only behind Brentford. In 21 games at home, Derby have been beaten only twice. They are nine unbeaten at their own ground, but how will that hold up against a strong Bees attack?

Phillip Cocu has turned Derby into an impressive defensive unit, especially at home. Only Leeds have conceded fewer than Derby’s 15 goals against at home. That has led to plenty of close contests here, with 67% of Derby’s home matches seeing two goals or fewer scored. That includes all of their meetings here with sides above them. With the pressure on the Rams, we expect another cagey game for them.

Bees to stay compact

Brentford may be known as an expansive, offensive side but that isn’t always their big game approach. They edged close games against Fulham and West Brom through moments of genius, so we expect the same here. Only West Brom have conceded fewer away goals than Brentford this term, with the visitors shipping just 0.86 goals per away trip this season. Given that defensive form, it’s no surprise our prediction here is to back against goals.

The majority of Brentford’s away trips have seen fewer than three goals scored, while it seems like Derby will look to keep things tight in this one. We don’t see either side giving too much away, so under 2.5 goals is our pick in this one. On top of that, we are also going for a 1-1 draw as our correct score prediction, as each of Derby’s four home meetings with playoff sides have been drawn by that scoreline.
