      Dundee United vs Dundee Predictions

Dundee United and Dundee each entered the 2015/16 Scottish Premier League season with similar ambition levels. They should both have squads that are too strong to get seriously drawn into the relegation battle, but the competition to finish in the top half is likely to be crowded with the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts, Inverness CT and Ross County all likely to feature.

All of the goals in Dundee Utd’s first two games have been scored in the 80th minute or later. They conceded late in a tight game against Aberdeen and then scored twice after struggling to break down Motherwell through most of their match-up last weekend.

Defensively, this is an organised football club that has a chance to steal points from some of the SPL’s better sides and should be pretty efficient in terms of securing results at home. McGowan, Donaldson, Dixon and Durnan form a reliable back four with Souttar linking midfield and defence.

They’ll need to find a way to score some goals though. Their first goal of the season came courtesy of an own goal, while their second was scored in the 90th minute by substitute Simon Murray. It’ll be interesting to see how manager Frankie McNamara lines his team up on Tuesday.

Dundee’s start to the season has involved plenty of goals. They dominated Kilmarnock on opening day Stewart and Loy each scoring a pair of goals in a 4-0 victory. On Saturday, Hemmings scored an early goal against Hearts and Dundee actually had the better of the possession, but a pair of second half goals from their more clinical opponents.

Saturday’s loss was probably a missed opportunity and Hearts’ tough midfield play will probably provide the model for Dundee Utd’s approach to this game.

Dundee’s formation and style of play just seems to support free flowing attacking football. Ross, Thomson and McGowan line-up as three players in front of the back four, they allow McGinn and Holt to offer the team width. There’s a good understanding throughout this team as to when to go forward and when to get behind the ball. They won’t be easy to stifle on Tuesday.

Rivalry clashes, especially those played early in the season, are always difficult to predict. Dundee Utd has had the better of this match-up in recent years, but Dundee might be the team with the better squad. We’ll take Dundee Utd’s defensive approach and home-field advantage as enough to secure victory in this game.
