      Espanyol vs Getafe Predictions

The Barcelona side had a pretty strong campaign last time around finishing 10th in La Liga and making it to the Semi-Finals of the Copa del Rey. They were quite strong at home throughout the campaign and will be hopeful of getting the new campaign off to a winning start under Sergio Gonzalez.

It might not be as simple as that though as they have lost quite a few players with Hector Moreno, 12 goal Carlos Stuani and first choice keeper Francisco Casilla all leaving the club. Several players have arrived over the past few weeks on loan and it might just take a bit of time before they all bed in.

Espanyol were enjoying a reasonable pre-season until a shock 3-0 loss at Girona last weekend and that might just be a cause for concern ahead of an opening day game they are expected to win.

The main reasons for that include the fact that Getafe lost 13 of their 19 away games last term and were beaten 2-0 at Espanyol last September. They ended the season with just 1 point from their final 7 games but still relatively comfortably beat the drop, ending up in 15th place which is no disgrace for a club of their size but it still triggered a managerial change.

It looks to be a good one too with Fran Escriba arriving from Elche after the club were relegated for non-footballing reasons. Escriba guided Elche into the top flight as champions after a long absence and in terms of final positions, kept them up twice, guiding them to an impressive 13th place last season.

He is one of the hottest managerial talents in Spain so it’s a real coup for Getafe to have got him in and he is likely to do a good job. Friendly wins over Cordoba and Albacete in their last two pre-season games will see them come into the competitive action with confidence and we might just see a bit of a shock here.

Damian Suarez and Victor Rodriguez were both big players for Elche last term and have followed their manager to Getafe while most of the squad from 2014/15 remains so despite the managerial change, they are perhaps the more settled of the two clubs. Backing Getafe to at least secure a point at Evens may be well worth a bet while you can take a punt on them winning 2-1 at 14/1.
