Hosts hoping to snap shock winless streak

A stunning 2-1 away win against Athletic Bilbao lifted Espanyol to fifth in La Liga on matchday 17 but to say their form has fallen off a cliff since would be an understatement. 

Ahead of this weekend, no La Liga side had picked up fewer points over the last nine games than their measly three and they desperately need to get back to winning ways if they are to keep their ambitious European hopes alive. 

Manager Manolo Gonzalez would be distraught if their winless run reached double digits but the good news is that it is unlikely to be, with a visit from rock-bottom Real Oviedo up next. 

Basement boys bound for yet another defeat

Oviedo’s confidence is being shattered further with every passing week and they started this round of fixtures a huge nine points from safety, with their woeful -27 goal difference making that more like ten points. 

They have won more recently than Espanyol, beating Girona in January, but that is their only victory in 20 games and, crucially, it came on their own patch. 

Real have gone ten away matches without a win, losing six of the last eight, and it is hard to see them finding a way past Espanyol, who remain in touch with the top six despite their recent struggles.
