Germany vs Mexico Predictions
The pre-World Cup friendlies must be taken with a pinch of salt, but the Germany team will still be pleased that they managed to break out of their winless streak last weekend with a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia. Prior to that they had failed to win their last five games, a run of form which is bound to affect confidence in the squad.
Certainly, coming into the World Cup on the back of six games without a win would have been demoralising for the side defending their crown, although the Germany team are never one who seem to take any notice of the huge pressure on their shoulders.
In fact, Germany seem to come alive when the action gets competitive. They managed to take the full 30 points from their World Cup qualifying campaign, scoring a huge 43 goals in the process. It’s no surprise with a squad that includes talents such as Timo Werner, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos, Mats Hummels, and Joshua Kimmich, but it’s still an impressive feat.
Aside from their excellent long term history in the World Cup, the current champions also have a manager at the helm who has seen it all. Joachim Low has been the boss of Germany for 12 years now, winning one World Cup and coming third in the other one.
Mexico are many people’s second favourites for this group though. They might not have names quite as big as the Germans, but they are certainly full to the brim with talent. Carlos Vela, Javier Hernandez, Jesus Corona, Hirving Lozano, Andres Guardado, and the dos Santos brothers are a balanced mix of both youth and experience, and now they will look to take the game to Germany.
The Central Americans have won four of their seven games leading up to this competition, and in qualifying they have only lost once in the past five years. They have scored in 16 of their last 18 competitive matches as well, and you would expect them to need a goal on Sunday if they are to stand any chance of getting something.
Germany haven’t failed to score in any of their last 15 competitive games, with their Euro 2016 defeat to France being the last occasion they were shut out. However, they have conceded in 12 of the 15 matches they have played in the last 12 months, so they could well see themselves picking the ball out of their own net here.
In the end Germany should have more than enough to win the game, so we’re backing Germany to Win and Both Teams to Score here. Considering nine of their last 12 competitive games have seen at least four goals, we’re also backing Over 3.5 Goals alongside a 3-1 correct score predictions.
Thomas Muller is the man to watch. The Germany attacker is a specialist in the World Cup, scoring ten goals in his two World Cups so far and becoming only the third player to score at least five goals in his first two World Cup tournaments. The Bayern Munich man loves the big stage, so we’re backing him to get on the scoresheet here.
Germany Predicted Lineup: Neuer, Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Hector, Kroos, Khedira, Muller, Ozil, Reus, Werner
Mexico Predicted Lineup: Ochoa, Salcedo, Ayala, Moreno, Gallardo, Herrera, Layun, Lozano, G dos Santos, Vela, Jimenez
