Ipswich vs Aston Villa Predictions

  • Aston Villa have won their last five matches
  • Four of Ipswich’s five league games this season have featured fewer than three goals
  • Villa have scored at least twice in six of their seven matches this term

Villa have picked up from where they left off

Aston Villa enjoyed a great season last term when their fourth place was enough to earn them a place in this year’s Champions League and they already look strong enough to suggest this will be the last time they get to dine at Europe’s top table.

Unai Emery’s team fell to a 2-0 home defeat to his former club Arsenal, but that has been the only occasion in their opening seven games when they have not emerged victorious and they should be able to build on that when they head to promoted Ipswich on Sunday.

It is a Villa team that is packed with goal threat with Ollie Watkins remaining one of the league’s sharpest strikers while Jhon Duran has been reborn just as it seemed he would be shunted out to West Ham.

He has been a great impact player with Morgan Rogers also terrorising defences and all that adds up for a difficult afternoon for the Tractor Boys.

Ipswich unlikely to quite have enough

Kieran McKenna’s side could have hardly been handed a tougher start to life back in the top flight after games against Liverpool and Manchester City, and after predictable defeats, they have at least demonstrated some resolve by earning draws against Fulham, Brighton and Southampton.

That point at Southampton came courtesy of a 95th-minute goal from Sam Morsy and McKenna is putting his faith in his hungry squad and has added players such as Blackburn’s Sammie Szomodics and Sunderland’s Jack Clarke who will be desperate to prove themselves at this level after being stars in the Championship.

But it is a massive jump and the Suffolk outfit may struggle to make much of an impact against another of the Premier League’s big hitters and those looking for a correct-score punt may be interested in a similar 2-0 success that Liverpool posted at Portman Road on the opening weekend.

Rogers can finally break his seasonal duck

While Duran has scored four times, including a superb winner against Everton, and Watkins has added three to the cause, Morgan Rogers has been particularly impressive up front for Villa.

The 22-year-old has a great physical presence and is proving a real handful for Premier League defences, having nine shots in his five starts.

With the potential prize of a starting slot in the massive midweek Champions League tie against Bayern Munich up for grabs, his considerable efforts can be rewarded with his first goal of the campaign.
