Lyon to Win

Reason for tip

At home, Lyon have won four, drawn one and lost two since Pierre Sage took charge. The coach has brought a freshness and verve to Les Gones, who are vying for European football now. Brest have beaten only one top-10 club away from home – Reims in September – and lacked a measure of control in their 4-3 win over struggling Metz last weekend.

Lyon 3-1

Reason for tip

Lyon have scored three goals in two of their last three games while Brest conceded three last weekend. The visitors are capable of scoring, but Lyon have only conceded seven times in their last seven home games so one might be as many as they can expect.

Lyon will fancy their chances against Brest

Lyon’s remarkable late-season run can continue when they entertain second-placed Brest at Groupama Stadium on Sunday night.

Les Gones have won seven of their last nine Ligue 1 matches and will not be afraid of the challenge of taking on a Champions League contender. That is because they have already beaten third-placed Monaco and Nice, who were second at the time, since Pierre Sage took over as head coach.

Sage has simplified team tactics and instilled a much more attacking ethos than had been evident at Lyon under previous managers. His players have responded by embarking on a run that could take them from the relegation zone to the European places as they currently sit only five points behind sixth-placed Lens.

Chaotic Metz clash suggests visitors are vulnerable

This is a match they can ill afford to lose if they are to achieve that goal and Brest arrive with solid away form after losing only one of their last eight road games.

But there were some chaotic signs present in their 4-3 win at home to relegation-threatened Metz last weekend and they will travel to Lyon without two suspended starters who have been regulars — right-back Kenny Lala and midfielder Jonas Martin.

Brest have beaten only one current top-10 team away from home all season and that was back in September, so the time is right to oppose Ligue 1’s surprise package this season. They could be about to run out of steam as they come up against a club who are finishing the campaign like an express train.
