Lyon vs Brest Predictions

  • Both teams have scored in the past five meetings, including last season’s 2-2 draw here at Groupama Stadium.
  • Both teams scored in Lyon’s final six games last term, with Les Gones shipping 12 in total across that spell.
  • Brest we’re joint ninth in the scoring charts last season despite finishing 17th.

Entertaining opener likely in Lyon

Ligue 1 second favourites Lyon will be gunning to make a winning start to the campaign under new manager Peter Bosz, but Les Gones represent woeful value at 1/3 for their 2021/22 opener against Brest at Groupama Stadium this Saturday.

35 points separated Lyon and Brest last term who finished fourth and 17th respectively, and Saturday’s hosts may well just have too much quality for a Brest outfit whose main aim this season will be to again avoid relegation.

Nonetheless, Lyon failed to dispatch Michel Der Zakarian’s men in a 2-2 draw here last December and the last five meetings between the teams have all been competitive, with both sides scoring in each of those encounters.

While Lyon begin the new season freshly focused with Bosz at the helm, there’s been little change at the club in terms of playing personnel and no reason to believe that their inconsistencies are going to be immediately stamped out. Lyon failed to win eight of their 18 home games last term, losing five, so you can see why we’re happy to swerve the hosts at such a short price.

In addition to the sides’ recent meetings, Lyon’s last six matches in 2020/21 saw both teams score with Les Gones shipping a dozen goals across that spell. Despite narrowly avoiding relegation, Brest were in fact the joint ninth highest scorers in Ligue 1, bagging 50 goals across their 38 fixtures.

In summary, both teams to score rates the best bet for this weekend’s opener, as Brest could be more than capable of again pushing a Lyon side with defensive questions to answer, and who are likely to be adapting to their new manager’s leadership.

This may well be an opening day cracker if recent meetings and the sides’ expected approaches are anything to go by, so we’re tipping up a 3-2 home success for correct score players.
