Reason For Norwich vs West Ham United Predictions

  • Norwich avoided defeat in 50% of their last eight home games.
  • West Ham kept one clean sheet in their last nine away games.
  • Norwich kept just two clean sheets in their last 12 home matches.
  • Both teams scored in 59% of Norwich’s Premier League home fixtures this season.

Norwich’s fate almost sealed

After a season long struggle and five straight defeats since the restart, bottom club Norwich City’s relegation and return to the Championship could finally be confirmed on Saturday with a defeat at home to West Ham.

The Canaries, who are a full 10 points from safety with four games to play, were beaten 2-1 at Watford in mid-week in a result that felt like one of the final nails in their top-flight coffin.

With just two Premier League wins in 21 fixtures since early December, Norwich have looked like prime candidates for the drop for quite some time, and having lost 23 of their 34 matches overall to date, there can be little argument that they deserve to go down.

West Ham’s mid-week misery

West Ham will be determined to avoid joining the Canaries in the second-tier next season, though their quest for survival hit a major bump in mid-week when they were turned over 1-0 at home to Burnley in disappointing style.

The defeat leaves the Irons just two places and four points clear of the bottom three having played one game more than both Aston Villa and Bournemouth in 18th and 19th position respectively.

The Hammers, who lost seven of their last eight Premier League away games, now have just four crucial fixtures left to secure their top-flight status, but with matches against fellow relegation candidates Norwich, Watford and Aston Villa to come – West Ham’s destiny is firmly in their own hands.

Goals at both ends anticipated

Norwich City lost and failed to score in each of the three home games they’ve navigated since the resumption of play last month, however, we think the Canaries can give their remote supporters something to cheer on Saturday.

With seven defeats in eight games as the visiting team, West Ham’s away performances and results since Boxing Day have been dreadful, and the Irons have kept just one clean sheet in their last nine assignments on the road overall since before Christmas.

The Hammers’ leaky rearguard has conceded at least once in every fixture they’ve played since the restart, and with their back four of Ryan Fredericks, Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell continuing to look more ramshackle than robust, we expect West Ham to concede again at Carrow Road.

Saturday’s hosts Norwich, who hold the Premier League’s worst defensive record, are without a clean sheet in eight attempts in all competitions themselves however – a record that makes a Canaries shutout extremely unlikely, and that in turn makes the both teams to score market an attractive option at the quoted odds for Saturday’s game.

Our correct score prediction of 1-1 ultimately anticipates a shared of the spoils in East Anglia however. West Ham’s appalling away record will have psychological effects that should prove difficult to shake, and we’re backing Norwich, who avoided defeat in 50% of their last eight home games, to restore some pride.

The Canaries are averaging just 1.11 goals per 90 minutes at Carrow Road this season however, while West Ham have hit the net an average only 0.82 times per away contest since August. Combining the clubs’ modest respective attacking outputs makes a 1-1 draw a likely final finish.

Key Battle: Ben Godfrey vs Michail Antonio

Promising 22-year-old centre-half Ben Godfrey is almost certain to stay in the Premier League with a new employer after Norwich drop out of the division this summer and the young defender has another chance to impress his suitors on Saturday.

Godfrey should be given a tough test by the dynamic and intelligent forward play of versatile Hammers star Michail Antonio, who was denied his third goal in as many games by the width of a post in mid-week.

Antonio’s pace and close control can make him a nightmare opponent to mark, as evidenced by his 2.7 successful dribbles per game average this season – a figure that makes him the Irons’ most potent purveyor of chicanery this term.

Norwich City vs West Ham team news

Samy Byram, Grant Hanley, Christoph Zimmermann and Mortiz Leitner remain sidelined for Norwich, while Todd Cantwell, who missed the Canaries’ 2-1 defeat at Watford, is also a major doubt with a hamstring injury.

Onel Hernandez should slot back into the team in Cantwell’s absence, while Marco Stiepermann should also make the cut.

Norwich City predicted line-up: Krul – Aarons, Klose, Godgrey, Lewis – Vrancic, McLean, Buendia, Stiepermann, Hernandez – Pukki

Robert Snodgrass and Felipe Anderson are both still unavailable for the Hammers, though Sebastien Haller should be involved again after returning to the bench against Burnley.

In-form Michail Antonio should keep his place up front ahead of the Frenchman however, while Mark Noble could start having watched from the sidelines against the Clarets.

West Ham predicted line-up: Fabianski – Fredericks, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell – Soucek, Rice, Noble, Yarmolenko, Bowen, Antonio
