Nottingham Forest vs Rotherham Predictions
Rotherham head to the East Midlands propping up the table and as favourites for the drop but they are no strangers to the underdog tag and have enjoyed a successful few years under the stewardship of Steve Evans. A 4-1 opening day defeat to newly promoted MK Dons was not what the Millers were looking for to start their season but they can’t be written off after just one game.
A Jordan Bowery goal gave them a 1-0 win at home to Cambridge in the Capital One Cup and a clean sheet and a win should have restored some confidence at least, even against lower league opposition.
No such joy for Forest who followed up a defeat at Brighton on the opening day with a humiliating 4-3 defeat at home to League 1 Walsall in the Capital One Cup. Worryingly their starting line-up included their first choice keeper Dorus de Vries and 3 of the back four that lined up one the opening day on the South Coast.
They have only won one of their last 17 matches now including pre-season games and you have to go back to March for their last competitive win which came against this weekend’s opponents Rotherham. If Dougie Freedman isn’t feeling the pressure yet he certainly will be if they fail to win here, especially in a league where managerial sackings are commonplace and at a club that has had 9 managers in the past 4 years alone.
Given Forest’s defensive deficiencies you have to fancy Rotherham to score at some point in the game and they did have the best goalscoring record in the bottom five last season, scoring in over half of their away fixtures.
There is certainly no value in backing Forest to win at 3/4 when their last competitive win was over 5 months ago and given they have made a bad start to this season. However they do have some quality going forward still in their ranks and a brace from last season’s player of the year Michail Antonio on Tuesday helped demonstrate that.
Forest also drew 3-3 at home to Aston Villa in pre-season and Freedman isn’t likely to budge from his positive approach, especially not in a game like this so there could be plenty of goals again here.
Backing both teams to score at 4/5 is well worth a bet given how Forest usually set up at home and that has happened in each of their last 5 matches at the City Ground including the two friendlies against top flight sides.
If you want a big return then take a flutter on a 3-2 Forest win at long odds of 25/1.
