Besiktas managed to gain a Champions League place on a technicality when Trabzonspor had their European ban upheld by UEFA. Now the side who finished third in the Super Lig step up to the Champions League, but they open with a difficult test.

The visitors already struggled at Europa League level last season, losing five of their six group games. They were beaten in every away trip in that group – including a visit to Slovan Bratislava. Besiktas have now lost four of their last five away games in Europe, while they return to the Champions League for the first time since 2017/18 despite not finishing in the top two.
