Portugal vs Luxembourg Predictions
- Portugal have beaten Luxembourg 3-1, 5-0 and 6-0 since the start of 2021
- The hosts have won all five games in this group, scoring 15 times
- Luxembourg have scored in four of their last five away games, including a 3-3 draw at Turkey
Perfect start for Portugal
Portugal have won all five games in their qualifying group so far, while they’re yet to even concede a goal as they push for a place at Euro 2024. Their 1-0 win in Slovakia last week was a huge step towards the finals next summer, but could their 100% start end in the Algarve on Monday?
The hosts are heavy favourites for the victory in this clash, but they meet a Luxembourg side that has struck some form. After claiming 2-0 wins over Liechtenstein and Bosnia-Herzegovina in June they beat Iceland 3-1 in their first game this month.
That has shot Luxembourg into third in this group, level on points with Slovakia. They’ll take some confidence to Portugal, in spite of their heavy defeat the last time these two met.
Another comfortable win for hosts
The gap between these two may be just five points, but there were six goals between them when they met back in March. Portugal ran out 6-0 winners in the away fixture, having scored four times in 31 minutes before taking a step back.
This could prove to be another uncomfortable night for the visitors, as Portugal have won 4-0 and 3-0 in their first two home games in this group. They’ve also won 4-0 against Nigeria and Switzerland within their last six home matches, while they enjoyed a 3-2 win over Ghana and a 6-1 routing of the Swiss while in Qatar last winter.
Portugal seem to have found a scoring touch beyond Ronaldo and they’ve hit 15 goals across their first five qualifiers. Not only that, but the pair met in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, with Portugal winning 3-1 away and 5-0 at home.
The only thing in the visitors’ favour is that they’ve scored in four of their last five on the road, including a 3-3 draw with Turkey in the Nations League. They’re unlikely to dent Portugal’s winning run, but they may end their streak of clean sheets. Regardless, the hosts look capable of racking up goals on their own, so over 3.5 goals is the best bet for this encounter.
