Tip Reasoning

  • Almost twice as many Reading home games (41%) than the Championship average (22%) have featured at least four goals.
  • There have been 14 goals scored in Reading’s last three home Championship matches (avg 4.66 per game).
  • At least four goals have been scored in four of the last nine West Brom matches.

Relief all round at Reading as entertainers welcome West Brom

Saturday’s meaningless matchup between Reading and West Brom looks likely to feature a few goals based on the recent performances of both protagonists. The Royals’ second-flight survival was assured last weekend when, despite losing 3-0 to Hull City, Paul Ince’s side learned they couldn’t be caught by Peterborough following Posh’s home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Relief has been the overwhelming feeling around Select Car Leasing Stadium and, now the fear factor has gone, we would expect a relaxed approach to their final two Championship contests. Ince’s team have hardly been focused on scrapping for points with backs-to-the-wall displays anyway and come into this game with the division’s second-highest average goal stat across the last eight games.

The Royals have scored seven and conceded as many in their last three home contests with Easter Monday’s memorable home comeback from 4-1 down to draw with Cardiff revealing the potential for a really high goal expectation here.

Five strikes could be possible if Albion join in the fun

West Brom have been no slouches in scoring and shipping goals of late with three of their last four featuring over 2.5 goals and two of those contests hitting the four-goal mark. The Baggies even finished with an xG of around 2.0 in last weekend’s 0-0 home draw with Coventry, so there is scope for both sides to prove some thrills and spills on Saturday.

With nothing at stake for either club, this one could have an end-of-season feel about it with experienced managers Paul Ince and Steve Bruce – close friends, neighbours and ex-teammates – likely to encourage their respective sides to go out and entertain.

While 11/4 about at least four goals coming looks a great bet to us, we’re pushing for a five-goal thriller at greater odds given the circumstances – and how generous Reading’s defence can be to visitors who go for it. That said, WBA have won only one of their last 11 league road trips while Ince’s side have come out on top in three of their last six at home – hence the 3-2 home win forecast.
