Tip Reasoning

  • Sheffield United have won one of their last seven opening day games
  • Birmingham have opened up with a win in consecutive seasons

Opening day bluntness for Blades

Sheffield United have lost five of their opening league matches across the last seven seasons (W1 D1) and we’re backing them to struggle in Saturday’s meeting with Birmingham.

In contrast, the Blues have played spoiler to promotion hopefuls Brentford in their last two opening matches, winning 1-0 in both. Arguably Birmingham are now in a stronger position now than in either of those matches, so they should prove to be a real test.

Lee Bowyer has made a few good moves in the transfer window, bringing Chuks Aneke, Ryan Woods and Tahith Chong to the Blues. They all look capable of contributing and it should lift the side. That stands in contrast to the Blades, who are looking to bounce back from the drop without adding anyone to their squad.

Bowyer’s arrival at St Andrew’s saved them from the drop in time to lose the final two matches of the season with nothing on the line. The former Charlton boss can build on a solid record in his short stint so far. Bowyer has lost only three of his 10 matches in charge and we’re backing his side to avoid defeat at the Blades, who are likely to take a little time to adjust to the demands of new boss Slavisa Jokanovic.
