Sheffield United vs Newcastle Predictions

  • Sheffield United are winless in 20 Premier League games (D2 L18)
  • The Blades have scored the fewest goals (8) and have conceded in all 17 league games this term
  • Sheffield United are the first side in 118 years to fail to win their opening 17 top-flight games

Can Blades take anything from victory?

Sheffield United finally won a game – their first since July – but can that really start to turn their season around? It wasn’t exactly a morale-boosting success, as the Blades edged out League One Bristol Rovers 3-2.

That win showed how tough this campaign has been on Chris Wilder’s men. Back in July they tore apart a Champions League-bound Chelsea side 3-0. Now they’re winless in 20 Premier League games (D2 L18).

Little to fear for visitors

Newcastle saw their chances of a cup run ended in extra time at the Emirates, but they did well to hold on to a 0-0 there through 90 minutes. The Magpies are starting to look solid, which is a problem for the hosts.

Sheffield United are the only side without a clean sheet in the Premier League this season, conceding in each of their 17 games so far. To make matters worse, they’re the lowest scoring top-flight side with eight goals in 17 matches.

The Blades are putting in solid displays, but things just aren’t working for them this term. Given that, we’ve gone against the Blades in our predictions here.

Magpies can extend record winless run

Sheffield United are winless in their 17 Premier League games this season – only Bolton in 1902-03 (22) have had a longer run without a win from the start of a top-flight campaign. While Newcastle have their problems, they should have little trouble here.

Against bottom-half sides this term Newcastle have won four, drawn two and lost two of their games so far. On top of that, the Magpies won home and away to the Blades last season, winning those clashes 5-0 on aggregate.

Sheffield United have lost their last five league matches against Newcastle and we’re backing that to continue in our predictions. We see value in backing Newcastle double chance, while we’re tipping a 1-0 away win with the Blades’ last five home games seeing them lose by a single goal.

Sheffield United injuries and team news

The Blades have concerns over Enda Stevens, George Baldock and Oliver McBurnie, who could join the likes of Sander Berge, Jack O’Connell and Jack Robinson on the sidelines.

Newcastle injuries and team news

Allan Saint-Maximin remains out while the Magpies are likely to have to deal without Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis.
