Difficult season ahead for Verona

Verona finished a respectable 13th in Serie A last season but they were still only three points clear of the drop zone and another relegation battle perhaps lies ahead.

Talented coach Marco Baroni departed at the end of the previous campaign for Lazio, with key forward Tijjani Noslin following the manager to Rome.

Visitors Napoli could only muster a 10th place finish last season having claimed the Scudetto the season before – but they did finish 15 points above their hosts and look well placed to open the season with a win.

The Partenopei had a disappointing season in 2023/24 but they still beat Verona in both league meetings. Both sides have new bosses in charge as four-time Scudetto winning coach Antonio Conte has linked up with Napoli and Paolo Zanetti has joined Verona. The appointment of Conte is perhaps a shrewd one for Gli Azzurri but Zanetti perhaps has a point to prove after a mixed record as a manager.

Napoli were taken to penalties by Modena in their Coppa Italia season opener but on another day would have won that game comfortably, while Verona went down 2-1 at home to promoted Serie B outfit Cesena in their own cup assignment in what was perhaps a worrying sign for the season ahead.

All things considered, the standard price on an away win looks the best option for our main bet and a 2-1 win for Napoli is the correct score pick.

The Gialloblu only conceded more than two goals in one of their final 14 home games last season and scored in both meetings with the visitors so they can at least keep this game close, but a Napoli win should still be expected.
