Villarreal to Win

Reason for tip

Villarreal are in great form after winning three consecutive games in La Liga. They have won all four of their home matches this season and can beat a Juventus side that were forced to battle back three times to salvage a home draw against Borussia Dortmund last month. The Old Lady have won only three of their last 12 Champions League group stage/league phase matches, losing five.

Villarreal 1-0

Reason for tip

Villarreal have conceded only once in four home games this season and proved they can see out a lead when their opponents are pushing hard during Saturday’s win over Athletic Bilbao. Another 1-0 win could be the outcome when they face a Juve side that have not scored more than once in either of their away games this season.

Villarreal vs Juventus Predictions

  • Villarreal have won three consecutive games and all four of their home matches this season
  • The Yellow Submarines have lost only two of their previous 12 European matches at home against Italian teams (W7 D3).
  • Juventus have won only three of their last 12 Champions League group stage/league phase matches, losing five

Yellow Submarine primed to sink Juventus at home

Villarreal will be looking to bounce back from their narrow league phase defeat at Tottenham when they host Juventus at Estadio de la Cerámica on Wednesday evening in the Champions League.

Marcelino’s side have made a strong start to the domestic season, taking 13 points from their first six La Liga matches — their best opening since 2015-16. That run includes a gritty 2-1 win away at Sevilla and a 1-0 home win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

The Yellow Submarine have now won eight straight matches at La Ceramica, scoring 22 goals and conceding just five in that span. Their home form has become a fortress, and Juventus will need to be at their best to avoid being overrun.

Defensive issues dogged Dortmund draw

The Old Lady secured a chaotic 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League opener.  They trailed the Bundesliga side three times in Turin and needed two stoppage-time goals to salvage a point. The defensive frailties on display will concern manager Massimiliano Allegri and encourage their Spanish hosts, who have lost only two of their previous 12 European matches at home against Italian teams.

Villarreal, by contrast, have looked far more balanced. Marcelino’s men were undone by a fourth-minute own goal against Spurs last week, but they dominated possession and created more chances than the hosts. With at-fault goalkeeper Luiz Junior dropped for this one, the Yellow Submarine will be hoping for a cleaner start.

The Spanish side have kept four clean sheets in their last seven home outings and will likely look to control the tempo and frustrate Juve’s attacking threats. A 1-0 win for Villarreal is a tempting tip, especially given Juventus’ inconsistency and the Yellow Submarine’s ability to grind out results in front of their fans.
