Wigan vs Barnsley Predictions
Wigan will go into the match in party mood after last weeks 4-0 victory over Blackpool confirmed them as the 2015/16 League One champions. Gary Caldwell’s men have not yet officially been crowned champions but it would take need to take a monumental change in fortunes for it not to happen. In order for the Latics not to win their third divisional title since joining the Football League in 1978 they would have to lose against Sunday’s opponents Barnsley. Burton Albion would then have to win their game against Doncaster Rovers but they would also have to make up the 20 goals on Wigan in the process.
Barnsley have managed to turn their season on it’s head. Early season form saw them struggling towards the foot of the table but their form soon improved and the side have produced the most remarkable of turnarounds since Christmas. Under previous manager Lee Johnson, the Tykes produced seven consecutive league wins between 28 December and 7 February to move themselves from the relegation zone to within touching distance of the play-offs. With Johnson then leaving for Bristol City it left Barnsley questioning their next move. Paul Heckingbottom’s installation as manager built on the good work and Barnsley are now within touching distance of a top six spot.
The form of the champions elect since the turn of the year has been electrifying and included a 20 game undefeated streak. The Latics have done the job they needed to do and will need to fight off a side that still has plenty to play for if it is to secure it’s playoff place. Both these sides are up there with the leading scorers in the division so for that reason I would go with there being over 2.5 goals in this fixture.
