Enzo Maresca takes charge of his first competitive game as Manchester City manager on Sunday, as they meet Arsenal in the Community Shield in Cardiff.
Arsenal vs Man City Ultimate Bet Builder
Draw
Six of the last nine Community Shields have been decided on penalties, including each of the previous three. These two sides met as recently as 2023 in this competition, which saw the pair draw 1-1. That scoreline has occurred in Arsenal’s last three appearances in the curtain-raiser, and this clash could also go the distance.
The fact that both sides are allowed up to six substitutions can see these matches peter out, while the starters are still working their way back to match fitness. With neither side set to be at their best, and both likely to be holding back ahead of the Premier League’s return, the draw appeals once more.
Martin Odegaard 1+ shot on target (including woodwork)
Odegaard had an injury-hit season for Arsenal last term, but he impressed at the World Cup. His quarter-final exit with Norway was long enough ago that he could feature from the start here, and encouraging displays in the US suggest he could make a strong impression.
Odegaard should be Arsenal’s most attack-minded member of their midfield three, and he recorded a shot on target in three of his final four games for Norway at the World Cup.
Bruno Guimaraes to be shown a card
Summer signing Guimaraes is set for his competitive debut, and he isn’t someone the Manchester City players will be happy to see. The Brazilian has been booked on nine occasions against City in his career; he hasn’t been shown more than three cautions against any other side.
He only escaped a booking in two of his 11 meetings with the Citizens as a Newcastle player, so Guimaraes is backed for a card this weekend.
Nico Gonzalez to be shown a card
With Rodri sidelined and new signing Elliot Anderson unlikely to start, Gonzalez should be the man marshalling the base of City’s midfield.
Gonzalez was booked on eight occasions for City across all competitions last season. If he’s going to have to replace the wantaway Rodri for the campaign, that number should rise.
Bernardo Silva’s departure also leaves a gap in City’s midfield. The Portuguese led all City players with 15 cautions last term, one of only two players at the club who picked up more bookings than Gonzalez.
