Teenage sensation Jannik Sinner wins the 2019 Next Generation ATP Finals to delight his home crowd in Milan.

The Italian youngster was our pre-tournament 6/1 each-way pick to walk away with the title, and he duly delivered. The eighteen-year-old had been in good form in the build-up to the tournament, reaching the European Open semi-finals last month, and he was handed a wild card for this event. Sinner also delighted the Italian crowd all week, as he became the first Italian winner of the tournament.

How Jannik Sinner won the title

The Italian ace was drawn in a tough group alongside Frances Tiafoe, Mikael Ymer and Ugo Humbert this week, and he made the perfect start to the competition. Sinner began the tournament with a comeback victory against Frances Tiafoe. After dropping the first set by a 3-4 score line, Sinner battled back to win the final three sets 4-2 4-2 4-2. The eighteen-year-old then eased to victory against Mikael Ymer, beating the Swedish ace by a comfortable 4-0 4-2 4-1 score line. Since Sinner had sealed top spot in the group with that victory against Ymer, there was very little on the line in his final group match against Ugo Humbert, and he lost a little bit of focus as he lost out by 3-4 4-3 2-4 2-4 score line.

In the semi-finals, Sinner took on Serbian ace Miomir Kecmanovic. Like his match against Frances Tiafoe, Sinner was forced to battle back from a set down, and he eventually got over the line with a 2-4 4-1 4-2 4-2 victory. Jannik Sinner took on top seed Alex de Minaur in the final, in a match many expected to be a classic. However, it didn’t pan out that way. Instead, Sinner produced a stunning performance to cruise to the title, beating de Minaur in straight-sets, and by a 4-2 4-1 4-2 score line. It was a terrific week of tennis from the young Italian, who earned more prize money this week than he had in his entire career prior to this event, and we expect to see a lot more of him in 2020, and beyond.
