The Segunda Division season runs parallel to the top European leagues, beginning in August and generally ending in May. However, this year the coronavirus pandemic has forced the Segunda Division end date to be extended.
A number of a few recognisable former LaLiga teams playing in the second tier of Spanish football including, Deportivo La Coruna, Malaga and Real Zaragoza. The 22 teams currently competing in the 2019/20 Segunda Division season are:
Cadiz, Real Zaragoza, Almeria, Huesca, Girona, Elche, Mirandes, Sporting Gijon, Alcorcon, Ponferradina, Rao Vallecano, Tenerife, Fuenlabrada. Las Palmas, Malaga, Numancia, Real Oviedo, Albacete, Deportivo la Coruna, Lugo, Extremadura and Racing Santander.
Some well-known teams have won the Segunda Division title over the years including Betis, Sevilla and Valencia, but leading the way with eight championship title is Murcia, whose last triumph arrived in the 2002/03 season. Real Betis have claimed seven Segunda Division title, Deportivo la Coruna, Sporting Gijon and Real Oviedo have five, while Malaga, Osasuna, Alaves, Sevilla and Las Palmas have all claimed the trophy on four occasions.
