Elite-level football may be on hold for the summer but there is plenty of other sporting action to look forward to in July and we’ve rounded up a host of experts to give you their best bet for all the major events coming up this month.

The action kicks off on Saturday as the Tour de France gets underway in Bilbao, with the Austrian Grand Prix following on its heels on Sunday before the shelves are cleared of strawberries and cream for the start of Wimbledon.

Golf fans will be looking ahead to the Open in the middle of July and we end the month in Las Vegas as Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr lock horns to be crowned the undisputed welterweight in the world.

Back our 721/1 Month in Sport acca here!

Tour de France – Sat, 1st July – Sun, 23rd July

Best bet – Jonas Vingegaard to win at 11/10

The 2023 Tour de France looks to be a two-horse race between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, and the latter may have the edge.

Pogacar drew first blood in the pair’s only meeting so far this season at Paris-Nice but his time off the bike may prove costly. Vingegaard has won two of his three stage races in 2023, having also taken the Tour of the Basque Country, and can also count on a superb support cast, so the Dane is fancied to claim the yellow jersey in Paris.

Austrian Grand Prix – Sun, 2nd July

Best bet – Max Verstappen to win at 2/7

Red Bull Racing head to their home Grand Prix with a seemingly insurmountable lead in the World Constructors’ Championship and the horde of Max Verstappen fans could be in for a treat on Sunday.

Verstappen, leading the drivers’ standings by 69 points, has won four successive races and is yet to finish outside the top two this season. He has won 15 of the last 19 Grands Prix and four of the last seven around the Red Bull Ring, so expect him to live up to his favouritism in Austria.

Wimbledon – Mon, 3rd July – Sun, 16th July

Best bet – Carlos Alcaraz at 10/3

Carlos Alcaraz missed the Australian Open earlier this year but has since picked up titles in the Buenos Aires, Indian Wells, Barcelona, Madrid and, most notably, at Queen’s. That should stand him in good stead for the rest of the grass-court swing and a Grand Slam title at Wimbledon may not be beyond him.

The Open – Thu, 20th July – Sun, 23rd July

Best bet – Tommy Fleetwood at 25/1

The 151st Open Championship takes place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club and there would be few more popular winners than local hero Tommy Fleetwood, who has found form in finishing runner-up in Canada and fifth at the US Open. He was second in the 2019 Open and fourth in 2022, and he looks a huge Hoylake runner.

Errol Spence Jr vs Terence Crawford – Sun, 30th July

Best bet – Errol Spence Jr to win at 11/8

Fight fans are in for a real treat this month as Errol Spence Jr and Terrence Crawford face off in a welterweight unification bout. Crawford is rated as the favourite, but in reality this looks like the very definition of a 50-50 match-up and a strong case could be made for either fighter.

Crawford is probably the slicker of the two, but Spence Jr perhaps has a bit more power and that may just prove the difference so taking ‘The Truth’ as the underdog appeals.
