Tip Reasoning

  • Real Madrid lost just one of their 19 away trips in 2020/21, winning 12.
  • However, Los Blancos did concede in five of their last eight La Liga games on the road.
  • Real have won and conceded on their last two visits to Mendizorroza.
  • Alaves found the net in each of their final six home games last season.

Ancelotti and Los Blancos to make a winning start

Carlo Ancelotti oversees his first competitive game back in charge of Real Madrid as the new La Liga campaigns gets underway this weekend, and Los Blancos are tipped to see off Alaves in an entertaining encounter at Mendizorroza.

Ancelotti guided the club to UEFA Champions League and Copa Del Rey success during his previous tenure which ended six years ago, but the main aim this time around will be to regain the La Liga title which Los Blancos relinquished to cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid last term.

The outstanding David Alaba has been brought in to replace the irrepressible Sergio Ramos in an otherwise quiet summer for Real on the transfer front, although the club are expected to complete the sale of Raphael Varane to Manchester United in the coming days.

The changes mean it could take Los Blancos a few weeks to acclimatise defensively, and while they should have far too much quality for Alaves this weekend, Ancelotti’s side are fancied to concede at Mendizorroza as they have when winning in their previous two visits.

Real won 12 and lost just one of their 19 away trips last season, though they did concede in five of their last eight, while Alaves hit the net in each of their final six home games.

All in all, a Real Madrid win and both teams to score makes huge appeal for this Matchday 1 fixture and the inclusion of an Alaves goal markedly enhances Los Blancos’ odds in the 1X2 market.

The away side are likely to emerge as fairly comfortable winners though, so we’re also forecasting a 1-3 correct score for Saturday’s late kick-off in the Basque Country.
