Bayern Munich go hunting for another trophy on Thursday night just over a month after winning the Champions League in Lisbon. They clash with Europa League holders Sevilla to mark the start of the new European season, but who will pick up the trophy in Budapest?

Sevilla stormed to yet another Europa League success, but they’ve failed to transfer that across to the Champions League. They’ve also failed to impress against the Champions League holders, finishing as runners-up in their last four UEFA Super Cup finals. Will Bayern add to that dismal run?

Goals on the cards in Budapest

Bayern’s last appearance in this competition came back in 2013, when their 2-2 draw with Chelsea was settled on penalties. Their only previous appearance this century saw them lose 3-2 to Liverpool. They should fit in well with Sevilla, who have a history of high scoring Super Cup clashes.

The Spaniards have seen at least three goals in four of their five matches in this competition. Their previous two were incredible clashes, as they lost 3-2 to Real Madrid and 5-4 against Barcelona, both in extra time. Those 2-2 and 4-4 draws within the 90 minutes were entertaining in themselves, while we expect a repeat of that against a Bayern side who scored eight against Schalke on Friday night. That has us backing over 3.5 goals as our first prediction.

Bayern to continue winning run

Bayern Munich approach this clash in imense form, having won 22 consecutive matches. They look far too strong for Sevilla here. Bayern have put eight goals past both Schalke and Barcelona in their last four games, so we expect them to comfortably win this clash. As a result, we’re going with a 3-1 correct score prediction given the Bavarians’ scoring form and Sevilla’s record of conceding goals in the Super Cup.

One man to watch here is Serge Gnabry, who has scored six times in his last four matches for Bayern. The winger has extra competition for a spot in the starting line up but his excellent displays have ensured he’s still first choice. Given the threat he carries from out wide, we think that Gnabry is well priced to score any time against Sevilla.
