Birmingham vs Leeds Predictions

  • Birmingham have won one of their last 10 games ahead of this clash with Leeds.
  • The hosts have lost three in four at home and could lose three straight home games for the first time in 2019.
  • Leeds have the second-best away record in the league this season.
  • The visitors have won six of their seven meetings with bottom-half clubs on the road this term.

Leeds Need Momentum

Leeds aren’t quite in a crisis, but they need to bring an end to this current run. The visitors are now three games without a victory, luckily staying only three points behind leaders West Brom.

With a clash against the Baggies looming on New Years’ Day, this would be a perfect time for Leeds to return to winning ways.

However, the Blues have issues of their own, with their four-game winless run leaving them only eight points clear of the drop. If they keep sliding like this, they could easily find themselves in the bottom three before long. Can the Blues end their run of one victory in 10 league games?

Woes for the Blues

Aside from a single victory at Reading, Birmingham have picked up only four points from their last 10 matches. They come into this game having just ended a three-game run in the league, having shipped three goals in defeats to Hull and West Brom.

This is certainly a downward spiral for Pep Clotet and his side, with the manager’s limitations perhaps coming to the fore. The hosts have also been struggling at their own ground of late. Birmingham are also winless in their last four home games in the Championship (D1, L3), suffering defeats in each of the last two.

They last suffered three consecutive home defeats in the competition in March 2018 (three in a row). They could finish 2019 with a similar run.

Travel Treble for Visitors

The visitors are well placed to take advantage of Birmingham’s troubles at home. Leeds have won 11 league games away from home in 2019 – their most in a calendar year since 2009 when they were in League One (also 12, excluding play-offs). They bridge the New Year with a hat-trick of away matches, starting at St Andrew’s. A quick return to the midlands to face West Brom is followed by an FA Cup clash at Arsenal.

The visitors will need to be at their best on the road for that run, but they’ve proven themselves so far. Only West Brom can better their return of 23 points from 12 matches away from home this term. The visitors come into this clash with three wins in their last four away games, while they have won six of their seven trips to bottom-half sides. With Birmingham losing all their home clashes with the top six, we are backing an away win here.

The issue for the visitors is their defensive strength here. Leeds are without a clean sheet in each of their last 11 away league visits to Birmingham, conceding exactly one goal in each of their last nine such games there. With the Blues averaging over a goal per game – and with Leeds failing to keep a clean sheet in three – we’re backing a 2-1 away victory.
