Borussia Dortmund to Win

Reason for tip

Dortmund have won every game since the restart whilst Chelsea are winless in seven of their last eight. We’re backing the hosts to consolidate that strong form even further.

Borussia Dortmund 3-1

Reason for tip

Dortmund are yet to keep a clean sheet at home in 2023, but they’ve won all six of their competitive games at any venue since the turn of the year.

Kai Havertz To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Kai Havertz has scored five Champions League goals for Chelsea including three match winners. Perhaps most memorably, he scored the only goal in the 2020/21 final!

Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea Predictions

  • Julian Brandt has made goal contributions in four of Dortmund’s six games in 2023.
  • Chelsea have only won two of their last 12 games.
  • Five of Dortmund’s last seven matches have gone over 2.5 goals.
  • Dortmund are yet to keep a home clean sheet in 2023.

A trip to Dortmund spells danger for Potter

Edin Terzic’s Borussia Dortmund have been nothing short of rampant since the return of the Bundesliga, winning all six of their competitive clashes whilst scoring at least twice in each game during 2023.

Without any major injuries to speak of, Terzic will have his charges primed and ready to build on their incredible nine goals scored in their two home games so far this year. However, they have conceded four times here in the process, so they’re certainly not infallible.

Dortmund’s record across their last nine games against British opponents doesn’t bode well (D3, L9), but they may well fancy their chances of stopping the rot in front of the famous yellow wall in their first ever home meeting against an out-of-sorts Chelsea side.

Chelsea can leave a mark

Although things haven’t exactly gone to plan so far for Chelsea under the Graham Potter regime (W9, D7, L7), they head here on the back of a four-game unbeaten run (W1, D3), their second longest run under the current boss.

Despite showing some solidity, it only serves to paper over the cracks of an eight-game run that has yielded just one victory since the turn of the year, never scoring more than a single goal in any of those games.

What Chelsea can boast is an array of talent acquired in January. The world’s biggest spenders in the last window have the likes of Mudryk, Fernandez and Madueke amongst others bolstering their ranks.

Doubling down on Dortmund

Chelsea have failed to progress from the Champions League round of 16 in four of their last six efforts, and we’re backing the hosts to put them on the back foot at this stage yet again. Terzic’s men have typically been solid of late with two wins to nil across their last three Bundesliga games, yet they’ll face a higher level of opponent this time around, regardless of form.

For smaller stakes, we’re going for a 3-1 Dortmund victory, their poor record against sides hailing from the UK is notable and up against the mega money of Chelsea, it seems feasible that they’ll be breached at least once.

Finally, we’re backing Chelsea’s Kai Havertz to get on the scoresheet anytime. He has never scored against Dortmund in seven attempts, but the former Bayer Leverkusen man has scored some crucial Champions League goals since making the switch to England, including three match winners!
