Dortmund should not make the same mistake again

A visit from Mainz will reignite some bad memories for Dortmund as it was their failure to beat them on the final day of last season that prevented BvB collecting the Bundesliga title.

Mainz scored two early goals that day without having anything to play for and a 2-2 draw was not enough to prevent Bayern Munich from retaining their crown, so there is some history and Dortmund will not want to make the same mistake twice.

A title challenge this season looks unlikely with Dortmund ten points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen, but two recent home defeats have been against Bayern and RB Leipzig and Mainz are not in that class.

Mainz are lacking firepower

Just three of Dortmund’s last 21 home games have featured fewer than three goals and it would not be a surprise if the home side did all of teh scoring on their own.

Mainz, who are second from bottom in the table, have won just one of their 15 league games this season and scored just 12 goals.

So it is questionable that they will break through and it would be no surprise if Dortmund headed into the winter break having claimed a 3-0 win.
