Mid-table contest promises goals

11^th-placed Avai and 14^th placed Bragantino are separated only by their number of wins in a congested mid-table battle in Brazil, with the two inconsistent outfits claiming just four wins from their last 20 league outings combined. But Saturday’s meeting is still not to be missed, with goals expected when two poor defences meet.

Indeed, Bragantino and Avai are two of just six teams to have already conceded 20 or more goals in this Serie A campaign, with the hosts shipping 10 in their last five outings, slipping to consecutive defeats since drawing with Santos. Both teams have scored in four of those games, and the total of 40 goals scored in their 15 league outings is on the higher side for Serie A.

Avai, meanwhile, have the second-worst defence in the division, with only struggling Juventude conceding more than their 23 goals against. They are also winless in three after losing 2-1 to Cuiaba, but have only failed to score in three of their 15 games this term, seeing goals at both ends in nine of their most recent 11. That run, however, has also seen Eduardo Barroca’s newly-promoted side concede multiple goals on eight occasions, including each of their last four matches.

Porous defences make goals at both ends likely

With Bragantino winning just two of their last 14 games and Avai winning just once on the road – albeit recently at Botafogo – all season, the win markets look best avoided for this contest.

Instead, we’re backing both teams to net, while a 2-1 win for the hosts could be a decent correct score prediction, with only two teams picking up fewer away points than Avai (four) in 2022.
