Cameroon and Egypt battle for final spot

Cameroon and Egypt meet in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday and the host nation look well placed to reach the showpiece.

The Indomitable Lions have won four of their five AFCON games, with one draw in their final group stage game, while Egypt have needed extra time to decide both of their knockout games so far.

The Pharaohs needed penalties to see off Ivory Coast and then extra time to overcome Morocco in the quarter-finals. Egypt have struggled for goals and have just four in normal time in the tournament, while Cameroon are averaging over two goals per-game and that extra quality in attack may just prove the difference.

Expect a tight game at the Stade d’Olembe

Egypt may be struggling for goals but they don’t concede many themselves either and have kept three clean sheets so far, conceding just twice in the tournament. They will probably try and contain Cameroon early on and attempt to hit them on the counter, but the tournament hosts have shown they can break down sides that take that approach and they should be able to find a way through against Egypt.

Cameroon have only managed one clean sheet so far and Egypt have quality in attack, most notably Mohamed Salah, and as such we may well see goals at both ends. Cameroon have scored exactly two goals in three of their games and have conceded four in five games in total, so a 2-1 win for the host nation looks to have a chance in the correct score market.

Vincent Aboubakar is the tournament’s top scorer with six goals, while team-mate Karl Toko Ekambi has five as the duo have scored all of Cameroon’s goals so far. Both will be looking to add to their accounts against the Pharaohs and Ekambi is the value pick of the two.

Aboubakar drew a blank for the first time against Gambia in the previous round, while Ekambi scored twice and has three of his five goals since the knockout stages began so I’m predicting another goal from the Lyon man against Egypt on Thursday.
