Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

We may see a reaction from the Southampton players after losing a second manager of the season so the visitors should be good for at least a goal. Saints have scored in five of their last six away from home, and have conceded in their last seven away. The visitors have also managed goals against Newcastle and Wolves recently. It is hard to see the visitors stopping Chelsea from scoring, as Southampton have conceded 21 goals in 11 away games in the Premier League.

Draw 1-1

Reason for tip

Chelsea have only managed one win in their last nine games and come into Saturday’s game after a demoralising Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund in Germany. Graham Potter’s men have drawn three of their last four games and could be set for another stalemate against a Saints side with a point to prove under interim boss Ruben Selles, so a 1-1 draw appeals.

Chelsea vs Southampton Predictions

  • Both teams have scored in five of Southampton’s last seven trips, they have conceded in all of those.
  • There could be a reaction from the Saints players after Jones’ sacking.
  • Chelsea have conceded in six of their last nine games.
  • The Blues have drawn three of their last four games.

Saints begin post Jones era

Southampton head to Chelsea on Saturday looking for their third manager of the season after axing Nathan Jones earlier this week.

Jones’ tenure lasted just 14 games in all competitions and he picked up just one Premier League win in eight attempts, losing the other seven, leaving the club bottom of the Premier League and four points adrift of safety.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter is himself under intense pressure ahead of Saturday’s game, with the Blues winless in four and in danger of a European exit after a midweek defeat at Borussia Dortmund.

Southampton had been holding talks with ex-Leeds manager Jesse Marsch but those discussions have broken down, meaning Ruben Selles will take interim charge at Stamford Bridge and potentially for the remainder of the season.

Both teams to score an intriguing option

Southampton have been poor for some time now but we could see a reaction from their players after losing a second manager this season.

Chelsea’s home form has dipped and they have just two wins in their last six league games at Stamford Bridge. The Blues also have a lengthy injury list, and it is hard to back a win for the hosts at such a short price.

With so many variables for this game picking a result is a tough task but both teams to score looks an interesting option.

Goals haven’t necessarily been the issue for Saints as they have scored in three of their last four games in all competitions – including in fixtures with Newcastle and Wolves – so they may well be able to find a way through against a Chelsea side low on confidence.

Chelsea have scored just once in their last four games but it is hard to see them drawing a blank at home to Saints, who have shipped 21 goals in 11 Premier League trips.

Spoils could be shared

It is always hard to judge how a team will respond to a manager’s dismissal but a trip to Chelsea may offer the Saints a chance to claim a point and end a three-game losing run.

Chelsea may well be jaded after their midweek defeat in Germany, and they have managed just one win in their last nine across all competitions.

The Blues have drawn three of their last four games and they may have to settle for a point on Saturday, with a 1-1 draw my correct score prediction.
Chelsea have struggled for goals all season with just 23 in 22 games, while Saints do tend to fare a bit better on their travels with nine of their 15 points coming on the road.
