Reason For Cologne vs Borussia Monchengladbach Predictions

Cologne’s performances against Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund over their opening two matches gave them some cause for optimism despite back-to-back defeats. That optimism finally materialised into points just before the international break as the Billy Goats came from a goal down to win their first top-flight game since 2018.

Veteran forward Simon Terrode (29 goals in 33 appearances in 18/19) has featured off the bench for Cologne in all three games so far, scoring the consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat in Wolfsburg, but it has been proven Bundesliga goalscorer Anthony Modeste who has been their most dangerous asset – he pulled them back into the game against Freiburg.

Borussia Monchengladbach coach Marco Rose will, therefore, be hoping defender Matthias Ginter is available after being subbed off when representing Germany during the week. He will be relying on him for some defensive stability in an attempt to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to RB Leipzig last time out.

Going forward they’ve had fewer problems. Last season’s top scorer Alassane Plea and new signing Breel Embolo have both found the back of the net at least once this term – the latter has scored in back-to-back Bundesliga games for the first time – which will no doubt add some confidence in the continued absence of captain Lars Stindl and winger Jonas Hoffman.

Based on odds, the two sides are equal going into the 100th Rhein derby meeting, but with Cologne losing more games against Gladbach in the Bundesliga than against any other side, the visitors look a good place to start in terms of betting. Gladbach are the veteran side and this game is just Cologne’s fourth match since returning to the German top-flight – it should be a tougher day out for them.

Notably, Cologne have lost each of their last three home games too when looking back to last season. Meanwhile, Gladbach have won six of their nine away games in 2019 (W6 D1 L2) – only Leipzig (9) and Leverkusen (7) have picked up more away wins in the competition during this period. As such, we feel there’s good value to be had in backing Marco Rose’s men for another win on Saturday.

Cologne’s continued problems at the back – they are yet to keep a clean sheet, conceding two goals per game on average – favours a stronger Gladbach attack. Hence, we can see them conceding more than one. However, with Gladbach themselves keeping a clean sheet in just one game so far – that being against a slow-starting Schalke – we could see Cologne getting on the scoresheet too. Our prediction: 2-1 Borussia Monchengladbach.
