Coventry Double Chance (Win or Draw)

Reason for tip

Coventry claimed their first points of the season by beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 away from home in their final game before the international break. The Sky Blues can follow that up with at least a point against Newcastle, who have won just five of their last 21 away league games stretching back to the start of last season.

Draw 1-1

Reason for tip

Goals have been a massive issue for Coventry but they did manage to score in back-to-back games prior to the break, in the cup and league. Both teams have scored in four of Newcastle’s five league games and they have scored exactly one goal in seven of their last 10 competitive trips, so a 1-1 stalemate has a chance.

Harvey Barnes To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Visiting forward Harvey Barnes stands out as a contender for an anytime goal as he has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign with one goal and two assists. Anthony Elanga remains absent for Newcastle so Barnes should take on a bit more responsibility and he can get on the scoresheet.

Newcastle test next for struggling Coventry

Coventry have found the step up to the Premier League tough after winning promotion as champions last season and they face a stern test when they host Newcastle on Monday.

Matthias Jaissle has enjoyed a solid start to his tenure as Newcastle manager with eight points from five games and they head to Coventry as the clear favourites, but the hosts may be able to get something out of the game.

The Sky Blues won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest in their final fixture before the international break and that should give them a huge confidence boost after a woeful start.

Newcastle also signed off with a win as they beat Hull 2-1 but on the balance of play they were perhaps fortunate to claim all three points, and they were thrashed 4-1 at Leeds in their last away game.

Road issues remain for Newcastle

The Magpies only managed four wins away from home in the Premier League last season. They have picked up a 2-0 win at struggling Tottenham this term, but they enjoyed a slice of luck in that game as Spurs posted a higher xG and managed six shots on target and Newcastle only recorded two shots on target.

Newcastle only managed one win away from home against the promoted sides last season, with one draw and one defeat, and Coventry were excellent at home in the Championship.

Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard will be keen to improve on his sides home form and he’s had a chance to work with the majority of his squad over the last two weeks, whereas Newcastle have had a greater number of players away on international duty.

On the basis of their respective starts to the season, Newcastle are deserved favourites but Coventry should be boosted by that win at Forest and that result gives them a platform to build on. The hosts look capable of claiming at least a point against a side who haven’t been particularly strong on their travels over the last few seasons.

Spoils could be shared

Coventry will be desperate to claim a first home win of the season but they may have to settle for a point and a 1-1 stalemate is the pick.

Lampard’s side hadn’t managed to score a league goal until their strike at Forest but they did at least end their wait for a home goal in their last outing at this venue, a 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the EFL Cup.

One goal may be as good as it gets for hosts and they can limit Newcastle to just the one strike. Both teams have scored in four of the visitors’ five league games and they have scored exactly one goal in seven of their last 10 competitive away games.

Visiting forward Harvey Barnes stands out as a contender for an anytime goal as he has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign with one goal and two assists. Anthony Elanga remains absent for Newcastle so Barnes should take on a bit more responsibility in attack and he looks a good price to get on the scoresheet.
