Dinamo Zagreb vs Valur Reykjavik Predictions

The champions of Croatia and Iceland meet in the first round of Champions League qualifying on Wednesday as Dinamo Zagreb entertain Valur Reykjavik.

Dinamo ended last season with an 11-game unbeaten run after a pair of Europa League defeats to eventual winners Villarreal.  That strong finish saw the Zagreb outfit claim both the league crown and the Croatian Cup, and they have picked up three friendly wins in as many attempts ahead of the start of their Champions League qualification bid.

Valur have been playing competitively in the build-up to this tie with the Icelandic season already in full swing. Heimir Gudjonsson’s men have enjoyed an impressive start and sit at the top of the table with 27 points from 12 games.

This may be Zagreb’s first game of the season and they may not necessarily be able to hit top form from the get-go, but they should have far too much quality for Valur over the two legs and will be looking to make a statement on home soil.  Dinamo, who are 33rd in the UEFA coefficient rankings, have reached the Champions League group stages in three of the last five seasons and have an excellent pedigree in European football.  The Croatian club claimed a memorable win over Tottenham last season as they reached the last eight of the Europa League, and they should have far too much quality for the minnows from Iceland on Wednesday. 

Dinamo have won four of their last six home qualifiers in the Champions League to nil and we’re expecting them to secure a victory without conceding on Wednesday.  The Croatian club also tend to be high scorers at home, with 44 goals in 18 league games at the Stadion Maksimir last season, and they could well put Valur to the sword with a 4-0 success.
