Dreadful Doncaster’s woes to continue

No matter what happens here, Doncaster are set to end 2021 in the relegation zone of League One. The hosts can take solace in the fact that they lost just thrice here in the league this term, though they were trounced 6-0 in their last home game against current top-three opponents (Rotherham).

A run of five defeats from Donny’s last six games has seen them out of both the EFL Trophy and the FA Cup, meaning that their full focus can now be put on mounting a great escape as they head into the second half of the campaign.

Super Sunderland to roll on

On the other hand, Sunderland are on a rampant seven-game unbeaten run in the league. A 5-1 defeat at Arsenal last time out can be taken with a pinch of salt and may even prove to be a blessing in disguise as they seek automatic promotion back to the second-tier.

A hallmark of Sunderland’s away league games has been entertainment. Eight of their 11 league trips produced over 2.5 total goals and that has largely been down to the fact that they have not kept a clean sheet in five consecutive trips ahead of this, suggesting they could be compromised yet again.

Considering the form of both sides, a Sunderland win seems like the most likely outcome – they have already beaten the bottom-two sides (ahead of the round) away from home by a 6-1 combined scoreline and as such, I expect a similarly rip-roaring 3-1 victory here.
